Institutions of higher learnings constantly face numerous security threats within and without.Ìý ºÃÉ«ÏÈÉúTV seeks to ensure, as far as is reasonably practicable, the security and safety of all students, staff, visitors and contractors, whilst within or situated on university premises.

Keeping our campus community safe is a top priority of the Kenya Methodist University (ºÃÉ«ÏÈÉúTV). ºÃÉ«ÏÈÉúTV strives to address the most pressing safety and security concerns in and around the campus. This will ensure that our faculty, staff, students, and guests are safe and secure through safety initiatives, collaboration, prayer as per our motto laborare est orare, dedication, and hard work. Together we can make everyone at ºÃÉ«ÏÈÉúTV safe and welcome.

The Vice Chancellor assumes the overall responsibility and accountability for the safety and security of staff, students, Assets and smooth operations and the same is cascaded through other departments within the university.

Security and personal safety is everyone’s responsibility and cannot be left solely as a matter for university management, Security staff or police.

ºÃÉ«ÏÈÉúTV will exercise its right to prosecute and/or take appropriate disciplinary action against any person who acts negligently, dishonestly, or commits a crime against the university.

Security Office is responsible for the effective operation and enforcement of the Security Policy and Procedures. Responsibility for security and personal safety rests with all persons who study, work or the University. All students, members of staff, visitors and contractors are expected to work together to ensure safety and security for all.

Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Security Operations

  • Support in the overall security management at the university
  • Manage security intelligence at the university
  • Conduct safety and security awareness training
  • Conduct internal investigations and recommend corrective actions to the university management
  • Enforce existing university policies and procedures e.g Access control procedures
  • Plan and support for fire drills and emergency preparedness in conjunction with the local fire safety departments at the county
  • Support in risk and disaster management/ response to emergencies
  • Carry out Security risk surveys in all the campuses
  • Continuously liaise with other relevant stakeholders e.g. local police, Chiefs and community leaders
  • Continuously conduct security briefings specific to groups

Ìý Ìý ÌýSecurity Incident Management

It is the responsibility of all staff and students of ºÃÉ«ÏÈÉúTV to report all activity, suspected or real, of a criminal nature, suspicious and/or unacceptable behavior. Incident reporting is crucial to the identification of patterns of criminal activity.

ÌýClose Circuit Television Video (CCTV) Surveillance

The operating environment within the university is manned by both the security personnel and complemented by the use of electronic devices referred to as the CCTV.

The electronic devices are deployed in all areas identified as critical areas within the university to deter, detect and delay crime at the institution and it is manned by ºÃÉ«ÏÈÉúTV security personnel on a 24/7-hour basis.

Personal Safety and Security Tips When On or off Campus

  • Always Stay alert and tuned in to your surroundings.
  • Don’t walk alone during late-night hours-stay in well-lit areas.
  • Walk, facing traffic, on the sidewalk near curb-avoid hiding places.
  • Walk with a purpose-don’t stop to talk or accept rides from strangers.
  • Avoid carrying large sums of cash, displaying jewelry or electronics.
  • Know the neighborhoods where you live and work.
  • Men—carry wallet in front hip pocket or inside jacket pocket.
  • Women—carry a small handbag/purse that can be held with one hand.
  • Avoid vulnerable areas and times.
  • If you are being followed, abruptly change directions, stay in a well-lighted area, and seek safety in a public building

Safety Of Our Lecture Halls and Offices

When it comes to safety in your lecture halls or office, being proactive is key.Ìý

  • Ensure doors and windows are locked, whether shared or an individual office space.
  • Ensure there is good control and the management of the office keys.
  • Keep valuables secured, preferably in a locked drawer or cabinet, and consider engraving identification on expensive items to deter theft.
  • Familiarize yourself with the fire evacuation plan and take note of fire alarm locations.
  • In the event of an emergency use the shortest but safest route to the assembly point
  • Avoid letting strangers into the building without proper verification.
  • If someone requests access and you’re unsure of their identity or purpose, it’s perfectly reasonable to direct them to the Campus Security Office
